I have been in the cabinetry business for more than thirty years. In that time, methods and cabinetry have evolved. However, what does not change is how you interact with people. When someone comes to me with the plan to remodel or design a kitchen, bath, bar or any other area, first and foremost I listen to what they want. We then discuss how to get them there. There are any number of reasons that what they say they want is not exactly what they really are after. My priority is to discern the difference.
I often stop and remind myself that I don’t know what you don’t know. It is easy to start designing and talking without checking to see if we have the same basic background or rudimentary “cabinet lingo”. Everyone understands the difference between full overlay and traditional overlay. Everyone knows the standard heights and depths of base and wall cabinets. Everyone knows the “standard” increments of cabinetry. No, everyone does not necessarily know all or any of those things. My job is to be sure that you understand everything we talk about. It’s not uncommon that people will remark to me “No one ever told me that”. I want to be as clear as is possible, so that you know what you are getting. We will spend the time necessary to reach that goal.
